A normal EKG recording consist of components which mark electrical events in the heart. These signal components are called P, Q, R, S, T and U. The P wave is the first component and is a short upward movement on the rhythm strip. The P wave indicates atrial contraction.

When reading a 12-lead EKG, practice looking for ST changes in the following groupings: First, look at the lateral leads/CFX distribution – I, aVL, V5, V6 Second, look at the inferior leads/RCA distribution – II, III, aVF Lastly, look at the anterior leads/LAD distribution – V1-V4

Walraven, G. (2011) Basic Arrhythmias Seventh Edition. When you are learning to interpret heart rhythms on an EKG, you must learn how to measure the QRS complex. The QRS complex is the spike on the EKG strips, which is after the p-wave. The QRS complex represents ventricular contraction (depolarization) of the heart’s electrical conduction system. In the previous article, we discussed how […] the EKG The diagnosis of BBB is based primarily on the width and appearance of the QRS. Ask these three questions. 1. Is the QRS wide (> 0.12 seconds) 2.

Birmingham Regional EMS System. Birmingham Regional Emergency Medical Services System. 2018 ALCTE Summer Conference There are many ways you can count a heart rate on an EKG, but I find the six second rule to be the easiest and fastest way. In addition, the six second rule is great for counting heart rhythms that aren’t regular like, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, sinus arrhythmia, sinus rhythm with PVCs etc. In order to understand a normal EKG rhythm strip, you must first understand how the heart generates electrical impulses through the muscle.
